Esophageal, Gastric, Duodenal Stenting

Esophageal, gastric, and duodenal stenting are procedures performed to alleviate obstructions or strictures in the respective parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Here are some details about each:

Esophageal Stenting
  • Conditions Treated: Esophageal strictures caused by cancerous tumors, benign tumors, scarring from radiation therapy, or other esophageal diseases.
  • Procedure: A stent, typically made of metal or silicone, is inserted into the narrowed esophagus using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached. The stent is expanded to widen the passage and improve swallowing.
  • Indications: Esophageal cancer, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal strictures due to chronic acid reflux (GERD), radiation-induced strictures, or other causes of esophageal narrowing.
  • Benefits: Improves swallowing function, relieves dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), reduces the risk of food impaction, and improves the patient's quality of life.
Gastric Stenting
  • Conditions Treated: Gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) caused by stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, peptic ulcers, or benign strictures.
  • Procedure: Similar to esophageal stenting, a stent is inserted into the narrowed area of the stomach using endoscopic or radiologic guidance. The stent expands to widen the passage and restore normal gastric emptying.
  • Indications: Gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, peptic ulcers, Crohn's disease, or other conditions leading to gastric outlet obstruction.
  • Benefits: Relieves symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and abdominal pain. Improves food intake and quality of life for patients with GOO.
Duodenal Stenting
  • Conditions Treated: Duodenal strictures or obstructions caused by pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, duodenal cancer, or inflammatory conditions.
  • Procedure: A stent is placed in the narrowed duodenal segment using endoscopic or radiologic techniques. The stent expands to open the obstruction and restore normal passage of food and fluids.
  • Indications: Pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, duodenal cancer, chronic pancreatitis, or other conditions leading to duodenal obstruction.
  • Benefits: Alleviates symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss. Improves nutritional intake and quality of life for patients with duodenal obstructions.
